ENLIGHT Lecture: 'Health & Sustainability', December 14, 5 pm CET

On December 14th at 5pm, this semesters’ first ENLIGHT lecture on “Health & Sustainability” will be hosted and livestreamed online. Health and sustainability are mutually enabling and constraining. In addition, there is a strong connection between ensuring healthy lives and sustainable development.

This session is organized in cooperation with liveSciences³ project at the University of Göttingen.

Mats Målqvist is Professor of Global Health at the Department of Women’s and Children’s Health at Uppsala University, Sweden, and currently the director of SWEDESD - Sustainability Learning and Research Center. Prof Mats Målqvist is a medical doctor by profession, and has a Master’s degree in Media and Communications Studies. Health equity is at the core of his research and educational activities. His presentation on "Health, Sustainability and Transformation" will be based on an editorial just published in BMJ Global Health.

Anjali Purushotham is a PostDoc at the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development at University of Göttingen. In her research, she concentrates on food systems transformation, nutrition transition, public health and rural transformation. She will talk about “Double burden of malnutrition in peri-urban Bangalore, India”.

Charlotte Scheerens is a health sociologist and post-doctoral researcher whose main focus area has been the intersection between environmental (lung)health and health equity. She is operational manager of the Climate Change, Migration and Health(care) network CliMigHealth, and is based in the Department of Economics at Ghent University. In her talk, she will give insights aboutt he psychosocial health impact and response to the climate-induced floods during the 2021 summer in Belgium.

Felipe Laurie Gleisner is Professor of Enology and the current Director of the doctoral program in Agricultural Sciences of the University of Talca, Chile. His research focuses on beverage chemistry and wine production, with emphasis on the study of phenolic compounds and the chemical and sensory effects of oxidation reactions in wines. He is a guest within the programme liveSciences³. He will present on “Wine production in Chile under current environmental and sustainability challenges”. The lecture finishes with a short discussion, the audience is invited to post the questions in the chat.

Networking event after the lecture for researchers from ENLIGHT universities

Each lecture is followed by a networking event for the scientific community. In the brand-new virtual space, the researchers from ENLIGHT universities can not only continue the discussion on the lecture`s topic but also use the opportunity to identify common research interests. This event serves as a platform for developing new ideas for future cooperation within the network. The ENLIGHT team supports this process by providing insights on funding opportunities. The ENLIGHT lecture series takes place each semester and represents one of the flagship domains which are key determinants of societal well-being and sustainability. For our ENLIGHT lectures, scientists, and researchers from across the ENLIGHT network come together to discuss different perspectives on and approaches to combat climate change. The topics in this fall's lecture series range from food & sustainability to the impact of climate change on migration.
