ENLIGHT at EAIE 2023 in Rotterdam: sessions and meet & greet!

EAIE Conference (26-19 September 2023)

The European Association for International Education (EAIE) is hosting its 33rd annual conference and exhibition in Rotterdam from 26-29th September. It is the biggest international education event in Europe. The conference theme is “ Connecting currents” and features a broad range of events such as talks, workshops, poster presentations and panel discussions that address internationalisation in higher education. Below you can find an overview of sessions involving ENLIGHT colleagues.

ENLIGHT organises a meet and greet for all colleagues working at an ENLIGHT partner university and who are joining the EAIE conference!  Come and meet your ENLIGHT peers at Theater Zuidplein in Rotterdam, on walking distance from the EAIE venue. Save the date: Wednesday 27 September from 17h to 19h CEST. IaH presents: Riding the waves of Internationalisation at Home through deeper and different connections

Be inspired by colleagues’ stories from around the world: some will share how they have been able to ride the waves in implementing Internationalisation at Home (IaH) in their institutions while others will reflect on how they have navigated when the currents were against them. In any case, connecting with colleagues across and beyond the institution is crucial within the IaH ecosystem. Collectively, participants will explore collaboration within and beyond their institutions and the significance of working in more networked structures.

COIL and virtual exchange as a fluid practice: How to get students on board

Institutions highlight the benefits of Collaborative Online International Learning and virtual exchange from the perspective of programmes, curricula and research. Students are meant to be the main beneficiaries of COIL but have been forgotten as relevant stakeholders. Can they be considered ‘co-creators’? Can COIL be an instrument for inclusion? This session will look at how to train, include and empower students to create a fluid and dynamic exchange.

Developing students’ cultural intelligence: A crucial success factor in internationalisation

Cultural intelligence is a major factor in optimising the benefits of international education for students. This poster visualises the results of our study exploring the variety of approaches and methods that can be used to develop students’ cultural intelligence. It will also show that through this development, universities are supporting the success and sustainability of their internationalisation programmes.

Ignite: New experiences in Erasmus + and European University alliances

European University alliances: What is the best recipe for change management within an international office? What are the main challenges in development, coordination and implementation of KA171 Projects? What are the organisational benefits of Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters programmes? All these questions and more will be covered in a quick-fire presentation format called Ignite, where the presenters have 20 slides to cover in their five-minute allotted time, followed by audience questions.

Erasmus Without Paper: Connecting systems to connect cultures

The digitalisation of Erasmus+ paperwork, which started as a grassroots initiative 10 years ago, is now a cornerstone of the mobility scheme. This session will illustrate how the higher education community set out to digitalise Erasmus+ mobility processes and what it means now that Erasmus Without Paper is a reality. Speakers from the European Commission and the Erasmus Without Paper consortium will discuss the next steps and how to ensure that no one is left behind.

Creating a sense of community in online formats

Online classes bring together students from all over the world. Participants don’t know each other and may never meet in person. For successful collaboration and learning, it is essential to create trust and a group feeling. But how to make this happen? Based on the experiences of virtual exchange seminars and international online summer schools, this poster provides an insight into which activities and elements can support the process of group formation and a sense of togetherness.

It takes two to tango: Tackling local challenges through various models of city–university cooperation

Worldwide, there is a growing recognition that strategic partnering between cities and universities can bring substantial benefits for both sides. The question of how to organise such partnerships has been at the heart of the EUniverCities network since its launch in 2012 and is now also being addressed in the European Universities Initiative. In this session, we will discuss different models of city–university cooperation used by our partners and European Universities Initiative alliances.

How to benefit from an international network: The success story of a network for international relations officers

The International Relations Officers’ Network of the Association for European Life Science Universities currently has about 200 members. In this session, we will discuss how to benefit from the network, the activities it organises, the role of international relations officers in making networks successful, and the importance of sustainability and green mobility. You will also be invited to join in a debate and exchange best practices.

Partnering with China: Academic collaborations in an increasingly polarised world

China’s rise and increased tensions with the West cast a long shadow over academic cooperation. Concerns about engagement with Chinese academia are legitimate and calls for disengagement have become stronger. Can we afford to withdraw from the country that boasts the largest education and R&D systems in the world? This session presents fresh perspectives on the China debate: Should we divest from China and if so, how? Or can we continue our engagement on our own terms?
